Public Protection Through Geology Licensure
Why Florida Needs Licensed Professional Geologists
Florida’s geology is complex, fragile, and deeply intertwined with public health, safety, and infrastructure. From protecting our drinking water to assessing sinkholes and ensuring safe construction, licensed Professional Geologists (PGs) provide expertise that cannot be replicated by engineers, architects, or other professionals.
Becoming a PG in Florida requires rigorous education, five to seven years of practical experience, and passage of the Fundamentals of Geology Examination, which has a national pass rate of approximately 50%. These high standards ensure that those entrusted with geological decision-making possess the knowledge, skill, and ethical accountability to protect people, property, and natural resources.
What’s at Stake Without Licensure
Removing licensure would eliminate critical safeguards and open the door to unqualified individuals making decisions that directly affect the safety and well-being of Floridians. Here’s what’s at risk:
Safe Access to Natural Resources
-
Responsible oversight of mineral extraction and fossil fuel development
-
Protection of aquifers that supply over 90% of Florida’s drinking water
Clean and Secure Water Supplies
-
Siting and construction of potable water wells and fire suppression systems
-
Design of deep injection wells to prevent contamination of groundwater
Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation
-
Accurate evaluation and mitigation of sinkholes and geologic hazards
-
Modeling contaminant migration through complex subsurface systems
Safe Infrastructure Development
-
Geotechnical assessments for buildings, bridges, levees, and landfills
-
Ensuring public safety in the face of ground instability and environmental risk
Public Trust and Accountability
-
PGs are bound by law and ethics to uphold professional standards
-
Unlicensed practice invites delays, cost overruns, and potentially catastrophic errors
Where We Stand Now
During the 2025 legislative session, HB 991 and the amended SB 110 proposed dismantling the Florida Board of Professional Geologists. Thanks to strong advocacy by FAPG’s Lobby Team and grassroots engagement across the profession, these bills did not pass.
But they may return.
Similar threats are likely in 2026, and we must remain organized, well-funded, and ready.
Looking Ahead: Advocacy and Action
FAPG is preparing now for the next legislative session. We’ve successfully launched three new volunteer-led committees to support this work:
-
Fundraising Committee – Building financial resources to sustain advocacy
-
Legislative Committee – Tracking bills, shaping policy, and coordinating strategy
-
Grassroots Committee – Mobilizing geologists statewide for local and statewide action
We are also planning FAPG Lobby Day for November 18, 2025 in Tallahassee. Join us to meet with legislators and show unified support for the profession.
Support the Mission
To protect licensure and the public interest, we need your support now.
FAPG is fully funded by geologists and allies, not by state funds or external groups. Your contribution directly supports:
-
Professional lobbying representation
-
Legislative outreach and education
-
Public awareness campaigns
-
Protection of Florida’s geologic standards
Licensure matters. Public safety depends on it. Let’s make sure it stays protected.
